Dining and Politics in Colonial Annapolis\nby Alexandra Deutsch\n[TO PURCHASE TICKETS\, PLEASE SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE]\nSpeaking of the dissolution of an Annapolis club in 1771\, the Reverend Jonathan Boucher\, a staunch and outspoken Loyalist remarked\, “It was finally broken up only when the troubles began and put an end to everything that was pleasant and proper.”\nAlexandra Deutsch's talk will imagine a dinner party in March 1773\, a dramatic and tense time in Annapolis. Using the home of William and Mary Paca as a backdrop and casting the dinner guests to reflect a range of political and personal perspectives\, this lecture metaphorically “sets a table” and looks beneath the opulent displays of wealth and gentility to uncover the rumblings of dissent among the elite guests. Social friends became political foes across the dining table.\nRichly illustrated with examples of silver\, ceramics\, glass\, furniture\, and archival holdings from Winterthur's collections\, this talk takes listeners through the courses of an eighteenth-century dinner and brings to life the reality that politics at the dinner table is never recommended.\nThe talk is based upon research conducted by Alexandra Deutsch and several plays she wrote during her time at Historic Annapolis.\nAlexandra Deutsch is the John L. and Marjorie P. McGraw Director of Collections at the Winterthur Museum. Her previous roles have included that of Vice-President of Collections and Interpretation and Chief Curator at the Maryland Center for History and Culture\, formerly the Maryland Historical Society\, as well as Curator of Historic Annapolis Foundation. Her career has been distinguished by nationally recognized exhibitions and many publications. Forty-four Warriors and guests gathered to enjoy the black tie dinner while others were able to watch the evening through a live stream. \nThe theme of the evening was to honor some of those among our membership\, who were awarded War Crosses  by the General Society of Colonial Wars.\n\nOriginally intended to honor those who had served in World War I\, the War Cross is now available to those who have served in most of the Nation’s armed conflicts\, including the Gulf War\, Kosovo\, Afghanistan and Iraq. At our Winter Court\, we bestowed War Crosses upon  eight of the ten members to whom they have been awarded.\n\nColonel Thomas F. Pike\, Jr.\, one of the recipients\, helped revive this tradition and spoke about  the War Cross.\n\n\nTwo of our Awardees were not able to join us in person:\n\nWillits Herbert Sawyer III\, Lieutenant 03\, USN\, 1957-1968 - Vietnam Service Medal 3 Bronze Stars\nand Philip Kingsley Chamberlain\, Specialist 5\, 1970-1976 - Vietnam Service Medal\n\n \n\n---------------------------\n\n\nA special highlight of the evening was to hear our War Cross awardees share something about their military experience.\n\nThose present were:\n\n.\nWilliam D. SUMMARY:Winter Court: Cocktails and Lecture at the University Club
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]Dr Christopher F. Minty examined the origins of loyalism in New York City between 1768 and 1775. In his presentation\, and by examining the political and social behavior of New Yorkers who became loyalists\, Minty offered a new interpretation of the coming of the Revolution and reoriented our understanding of the origins of American political practice. Minty is an editor at the Center for Digital Editing at the University of Virginia\, where he is managing editor of the Naval Documents of the American Revolution and contributes to The Papers of George Washington.
